  1. The Yorkshire Dales are full of fantastic walking, where every valley has its own character and the moorland rises high and wild around them. This guidebook is part of a two-volume set that explores the region, with this volume concentrating on the North and East facing Dales. In 42 day walks, the Howgill fells, Mallerstang Valley, Swaledale, Arkengarthdale, Wensleydale, Coverdale and Ninnerdale can be discovered in gentle and more challenging walks between 3 and 16 miles long.

The Yorkshire Dales provide a dynamic and varied landscape for a walker to explore, from escarpments to woodland, ravines and caves to wide green valleys. Along with the natural splendour of the Dales, humans have left their mark; from Pendragon Castle, to viaducts that leap valleys and ancient Iron Age settlements, as well as the towns and villages of Sedburgh, Askrigg, Aysgarth, Reeth and Hawes.

Each route in this guide includes an annotated OS map, deatils on the route length, terrain covered and available amenities. Also included is a thorough introduction on the history and geology of the Dales, wildlife, information on points of interest along the way and advice on practicalities so you can make the most of your day out walking.

Routes can be combined and devised into longer walks
Most routes are circular to avoid retracing steps or being stranded far from the start
